Evie Khang - Architectural Blend

For my piece I combined different architectural elements to create a lighthouse on a cliff. My original concept was to create a fairy-tale like home from a fire hydrant, but I soon realized the potential for it to become something greater. I feel I was able to create a calm and serious mood here which greatly juxtaposes with the odd nature of a fire hydrant-lighthouse blend resulting in a whimsical feel to my piece. In the end, I believe I was still able to capture the fairy-tale feeling I wanted though.

  1. In your photograph, the viewer sees a dark contrast setting, with an ocean backdrop, a lighthouse fire hydrant on a cliff with a walkway leading up to the lighthouse. You can see lit street lamps illuminating the darkness, and a light coming from the top of the lighthouse.
I feel as though with the dark setting, it creates almost a mysterious mood, but yet holds a sense of calmness. Also on the topic of mysteriousness, I think that the viewer can interpret this piece in different ways. I could see it being interpreted in a dark, uneasy sense, or with a peaceful calming interpretation. It almost seems as if a storm is brewing to the right of the image. Could this be foreshadowing that something is coming? Or like a calm before the storm interpretation? Or possibly a storm has just passed, and things are calm again.
When evaluating your work, I think you did a good job with the dark lighting contrast, and I like how you added illuminated light to the light posts, I think that the small detail really adds alot to the piece. I think that the point of view is interesting and somewhat difficult to have achieved at that angle. Possibly slightly darkening the cliff side around a shade darker would help with the cliff perspective, but that may not be needed. I think that the overall concept is interesting, and that the concept lies more in the setting than in the lighthouse itself. The blend of the fire hydrant, and top of building seems to work well in the idea of creating this blended lighthouse.
With your piece the viewer doesn't have to question the object being shown, but rather the context as a whole. I interpret this piece as representing overcoming something or a dark time in our lives. With the dark clouds moving on, and the clearing of clouds with the lighthouse still shining forward, I interpret that we can withstand trials that we face, in the light of a difficult time.
