Rocky's Old is New

For this project, I wanted to show the importance of food and how it is something that is taken for granted at times. This was taken with a couple friends on campus at the Panda Express capturing the moment of eating and the friend trying to steal the food. In photoshop I started off by messing with some brushes. Then I added the library of congress which is the slight scratch on the bottom right. Then messed with more brushes and added a border. Lastly messing with the levels and adding a slight color balance.

  1. The piece is a photo of two friends consuming food together inside a restaurant. Both friends are smiling and laughing as the friend on the right tries to take the food from the friend on the left. The picture is then layered with noise, a crack, and several splatter brushes to give it an aged and weathered look. The picture is black and white and there is a color overlay to add a sepia tone to it. Thankfully the modern bottle of Gatorade is painted over to help make the fact that it is a modern picture less obvious.

At first glance, there doesn’t seem to be an overt meaning to the picture. The piece seems to serve as a picture to capture a humorous moment between two friends. Nothing about the actual content of the image seems to lend itself to making it seem like a picture that would be taken during the time of wet plate collodion. So overall the work seems to be presenting this funny moment between friends.

As stated previously, hiding the Gatorade bottle with the splatter effects does a good job of making the image more believable, but some detail to help sell the effect would be more appreciated. Overall the layering of effects, brushes, and scratches does a good job of setting the picture in the desired style, I think the crack and amount of weathering are very well done on a technical level, with my only comment being maybe playing more with the depth of field and composition. The overall concept of the photo itself including the framing, outfits, and setting doesn’t sell the piece as an actual vintage photo which leads to a clash of styles.

I think on a technical level the piece is well thought out and composited with good use of effects and brushwork to create the weathered feel. Though in terms of the original picture itself the piece is left without a great foundation to create a story or meaning that would be believable as a wet plate collodion photograph. Overall I think you did a great job, I just would have liked to see more done in terms of the original photograph to help establish and sell your story/concept better.
