Madyson Young- Fake It

For this project, I reimagined the Titanic sinking as people seeing it from afar while reporting on it. I chose a picture I took when I went to the beach and removed my family that was in the way, added the ship in the far distance as well as reporters and observers on the beach. I changed photos of people with actual video cameras as well as people from an actual photo who watched the Titanic set sail.

I was thinking how some people tend to watch and report rather than actually take action, or if we refer to the movie, when all the people in the boats were watching as the ship was going down and didn't go back except for that one boat out of the 20.

  1. The environment is located at the beach. In the ocean, there is a ship sinking that is also centered in the composition. The ship is most likely to be the Titanic ship. There are also people in the water near the sinking ship. In the foreground, there are reporters who are photographing the caustotrophy. The artist decided to filter this artwork in black and white.

There is a sinking ship which is a tragic event for those on the ship but also those around who are witnessing. Those in the water are watching it all go down and also seem to have no urgency to get out of the water. Some of the people are blurry while some of them are clear. It seems strange that there is no sign for help along with no safety boats or people jumping out of the ship to try to survive. It seems that some of the photographers are filming the actual event happening or the reactions of others in front of them.

I think the scale of some of the people could have been more believable as their heights and relation to their position does not align well. The angle of the boat could be adjusted to make it seem more believable of it sinking rather than it going directly nose down. Along with that, I think adding some big waves around the ship could also dramatize the event. The ship is also relatively close to shore which in context, should be further out into the horizon for depth. Adding helicopters and other boats could help dramatize the event. I think because there is a bit of modernization to this event, having those photographers with phone cameras can play on the fact of it being more believable. I believe this ties back to the article of how we know this event happened in the past but it can take a modern twist to it while still providing the theme.

The Titanic sank due to it hitting an iceberg. In this tragedy, it is hard to figure out the cause of the ship sinking. The only thing viewers can do is just watch it unravel and potentially call for help. But in this case, there seems to be no sense of urgency in calling for help. I theorize that this is also how society is like if we see something happen, the most we can do is watch it, try to resolve it, or best to let it be. People do not want to put themselves at risk and others.

Overall, interesting twist on how the artist wanted to recreate the event of the Titanic. The setting is more established with it being in the public. I think adding other elements, emotions, and objects in this artwork would make this feel more dramatic.
