Night Prowler - Ashley Legassie

My concept for this composition was to create the faces of pumpkins using light. Originally, I tried sparklers to make the facial features but it wasn't quite there. For the final composition, I used a glow ring that flashed blue and red. I also used the glow ring to make the lines of the light around the pumpkins to create movement. I used many blending modes and adjustment layers to make the coloring more consistent. All images I took and I didn't use any generative AI.

  1. My idea for the project was to include some Halloween theme since it is October. I ideated on ways to use light to make an eerie scene but my favorite idea was to create the faces of the pumpkins using light. The subject is the pumpkins. I composed in a picture of the sky the same night as I took the picture of the pumpkins.
This project was a very experimental one for me in both experimenting through photography, composition, and Photoshop. I originally tried to make the faces of the pumpkins using a sparkler which resulted in unbalanced lighting and streaks based on the different exposure times. As an alternate method, I tried using a light-up ring which produced better results. These lines were more crisp and accurate than the original photos which made the composition more realistic. I experimented with the lighting of the sky and pumpkins to darken the composition and to make it more interesting.
As far as a deeper meaning of the work, I think that this work is about Halloween and what it signifies. To me, this highlights things relating to the devil and evil spirits. This is what I think is being portrayed through the movement of ghosts/evil spirits in the air and the evil faces of the pumpkins.
I think that the content works well but could have maybe been pushed further in the production stages. Shooting on my iPhone did slightly limit me to un-controlled exposure times. If I were to do it again I would download an app to fix this issue. I also think that I could add more “spirits”/lights coming around the pumpkins.
The relevance of this piece comes with the subject matter of Halloween. It’s a current theme that people are thinking of since it is coming up and this image is being shared to make people think about Halloween. I think that the image highlights that night exposures can use light to do things other than just neon lines and fire. This uses light in a more practical application that we are used to seeing in other mediums.
Overall, I think that my work came out well. One notable Night Prowler composition I found was by Kim. In this piece Kim used many different layers of lights to create a circle around the subject/to create the subject. The reason I am drawn to this piece is because of the use of abstract features. I think that I could have added more of this in my piece, kind of like I mentioned earlier, with more movement lines around the pumpkins.
