Sara Aftimos- Night Prowler

For this project, I really wanted to explore more of the city of Charlotte. I started with the light rail where I wanted to capture the motion that the rail created when in movement. As I continued walking through the city I captured tons of pictures of cool buildings with bright lights. The overall concept I wanted to create was the overwhelming sense of movement, and how things move so fast in our lives. After taking multiple photos of the light rail, I decided that this would be the main focus of my project, to show how we all go to different places and think of multiple things with the constant movement of everything around us. With all the sense of light within my piece from the long exposure, it can be seen how many things surround us every day. While combining my photos, I added color to the light rail, to add more contrast within the piece. As the other images are pretty neutral I included the blue to make the light rail stand out and make it the first thing you see when viewing.

  1. For my work I wanted to experiment with exploring Charlotte. I was really fascinated by capturing some images of the city life, especially the light rail. My work was highly focused on being composed around the light rail. While walking through the city there was so much action, lights, and sounds. With the photos I took I composited them in order to create that overwhelming feeling within. Some pictures I took, I loved and I tried to incorporate within my piece but they didn't read well. Those pictures that I didn't use had blue and red lights so when I overlaid it on the image and tried to incorporate them it didn't work as well as my other photos that I had. While interpreting the work, the light rail/train is the main focus and all around is light fed into chaos. With the overlay and composite of the images it looks as though everything is moving too fast to process. The light rail can be seen as a potential symbol of how we move so fast paced in everyday life. The content and technique are actively present in this piece. The content is focused on a cityscape and transportation with the constant movement of everything around us. The technique includes the use of contrast and bright blue on the light rail to make it the focal point of the piece. The blending of the images include the overlay method and placing specific elements onto other places to make the piece more transformative. I do think that the blending of the long exposure images and parts of specific images help transform this piece. I could work in the future to lengthen the exposure to add more time to the overall exposure being captured. This work exists within our larger culture as people can relate this to metropolitan life and the lifestyle of city life as it is always moving constantly. The image was shared with an audience to make them stop and think. There's always something happening whether it is around you or in a completely different part of the world. The world is always evolving and changing, with the constant growth and evolution of everything around us. I believe this piece was shared with an audience to make them stop and think of how everything around us moves so fast. Some things happen so fast we don't even notice something has changed. This assignment speaks to what happens with night exposures as the fast-paced movement is highlighted with the abundance of light around. The long exposure technique creates an extended shutter speed that builds a visually striking effect. With this it produces light trails and makes moving objects appear ethereal due to the motion blur. With long exposure it enhances the night dynamic by revealing the details that would otherwise be lost in a regular image. For my comparative summary I decided to discuss Cassie Eberle's “Night Prowler”. I was drawn to this work because of how complex and interesting it is. I think the use of color makes this piece stand out and make it very interesting to view. The use of overlaying the self portrait images really elevates the piece as the color overlay brings out feelings of chaos and various emotions when viewing each expression. The shadows and colors are utilized very well in this piece and draws the audience into the piece itself. This piece provides me with inspiration with the sense of wanting to experiment with different colored lights and even using myself as the subject to be photographed in the long exposure technique.
