Transformative Portrait - Bryce Locaylocay

For my project, I decided to focus on an incident that occurred back in February of this year. My friends and I were involved in a car accident that could have turned fatal. Thankfully, the most severe injury among us was a concussion, but the experience completely changed my perspective on life. Since then, I’ve made a conscious effort not to take a single day for granted. I find myself being more present in the moment and truly appreciating the company of others. Not that I didn’t do so before, but this experience definitely heightened that awareness.

  1. The transformative portrait created by Bryce is an intense view of a car accident on the road. This image can say multiple things and relate back to the individual and their experiences. While interpreting the work the choice to highlight and make the car the main focal point had a reason behind it. This shows the emotional and personal memory or attachment to what happened in the car accident. The image works well as a portrait with the elements that are within the piece. Everything included in this piece added a new element that elevated the overall message and composition.
It is transformative with the elements added such as the clouds moving, the sound in the background, and the flashing red lights around the car accident. The clouds moving so fast can resemble how in the moment everything moves very fast with no control of anything around the situation. The red subtle flashing lights highlight the key element and focus on the car accident. The background audio is a nice touch added to further enhance the piece to make it more urgent and intense. The audio also brings into play how whenever anyone hears sirens or physically sees flashing lights everybody's senses are heightened and your awareness increases. That feeling can feed into how the individual felt in that moment. When reading the description Bryce discusses how he decided to focus on an incident that happened to him this year. He describes how this accident changed his perspective and view on life, and how now he puts even more effort into being present.
This work exists within our larger culture and relates to how we feel about car accidents nowadays. The transformation and image relates to our culture, as some of us see many car accidents on roads or highways. Whenever you pass a car everyone always looks over to see how bad it is and sometimes people get a weird feeling. This feeds into the feeling that it could happen to anyone and to be careful when driving on the road. This image was shared with a audience to show how serious car accidents can be and how dangerous they are. This represents how we can be more careful, bring more attention to being safe on the road, and not taking everyday you have for granted.
Overall, I think this transformative portrait is well done. The elements of the audio contrasting the still image of the car wreck with the constant movement of the clouds and blinking lights adds a lot of variation. The main message is very clear and focuses on car accidents and how they can be very traumatic, and sometimes lead to people appreciating more of the little things in life.
