Transformative Portrait - Ximena Alvarado

The idea behind my concept is to tie it back to childhood and the idea of fairytales. I choose petter pan because it ties to the idea of not growing up and saying a child forever. This ties back to what my future contains for me because I graduate in December which means I practically have to go through changes in my life. I have to get a "adult" job and won't be dealing with my regular routine of classes and school. In my eyes, I'm growing up, so through my portrait, I wanted to tie it back to the idea of holding on to my childhood and not growing up for a second.

  1. In Transformative Portrait by Ximena Alvarado, the viewer sees a young girl looking out of her window at something magical. She has a glowing grin on her face and is surrounded by twinkling stars. In the distance you see a clock tower and the moon lit sky which is casting a shadow on a person-like figure flying in the sky.
This portrait seems to feel very feminine like it's from some sort of princess fairytale. The stars create an obvious connection between what's happening outside and herself. This composition makes me feel like the creator is a bit of a romantic that is rekindling their connection with fairytales and magic.
Being a Tinker Bell stan, I am very aware of Peter Pan. I recognize the clock tower, the shape of the flying character, the stars, the night sky. With that knowledge it makes this composition easier to understand. As a classmate of Ximena’s, I also know that we are graduating this December, which in a way is saying goodbye to childhood. Peter Pan is a character that essentially takes children to Neverland and causes them to never grow up, so I think this piece is reflecting on that. It is also nicely put together with all of the separate elements.
I think the motion is done very well for the sake of understanding the work. Without the moving Peter Pan we wouldn’t know what exactly she was looking at, or why she was looking at it with such a glaze. Also the stars add to this dramatic, magical event.
As a whole, Disney Productions have always aimed to create some sort of memorable fairytale. Also, being a children's channel they create content aimed to hold children's attention. It is interesting in this composition to see how Ximena turned this idea into a real life feeling that she is experiencing. I think it relates closely to our cultural fear of growing up.
Overall, Ximena's work is nicely composed and carries an impactful meaning. The motion does a nice job directing our eyes and making an impossible thing come to life. The lighting of each piece seems to flow together well and there are no obvious signs of photoshop. The only thing I might have done was make his body move position a bit rather than just floating in one stiff pose. Other than that, it's very cool!
