Under the Influence: David Carson (Ashley Legassie)

The Compositing artist I chose is David Carson. I was immediately drawn to Carson’s work because of the overlapping of lettering, texture, and imagery that he uses. His work is known for its iconic blend of typography and image in a chaotic manner. His approach to the text and images in a fragmented way breaks from conventional design - making him show his compositing side. The use of layers within his composites creates an unexpected and unconventional way of creating artwork. By weaving these two elements together in fragmented, unexpected ways, Carson breaks from convention and introduces a sense of disorder that is tactile.

The fragmented layers of text and imagery are the main formal elements in Carson’s work. This adds depth and complexity to his work. The text often uses rough typographic styles with variations in fonts. Paired with gritty textures and colored visuals, his work creates a dynamic piece. The layers in the pieces create a sense of mystery that urges viewers to slow down and decipher the content. His work often utilizes a range of colors creating contrast, from deep blacks and stark whites to colorful elements. This combination creates depth and variation that draws you into the piece more. I plan to achieve this by adjusting the curves and levels to bring out intense contrasts.

In my project, I intend to use David Carson as an influence. With layered content and textures, I will incorporate typography into digital compositing. My plan is to incorporate photos within the composition. Creating the deeper meaning of a lifetime - memories that are all jumbled together looking like chaos but having a deeper meaning. The goal is to explore visual experimentation by combining layers of unique textures and imagery.
