Imagine an airy and spacious restaurant space on campus that combines horticulture design with a dining experience. I wanted to design the outside of a greenhouse restaurant that people can visit and have a tropical experience. The original image is of Winningham, and I used the greenhouse from Pike's Nursery. The banana plants are from my neighbor's backyard. I had glitches with photoshop, so the submission was delayed.
Architectural Blend - Written Critique

1. The Architectural Blend piece by Jacob Taylor contains a wide shot of a geometric glass structure with a title of “The Garden”. There is a lot of greenery surrounding the space in the form of small trees and various sizes of bushes and other plants. The majority of the front of the building is covered by the greenery but the entrance and roof can be seen. The entrance is made of white stairs leading up to a small entrance, roofed by alternating convex and concave topped white pillars. The parts of the building that can be seen behind the plants is made of brick, blocking the view of the outside from inside based on where the doors are placed. There are wide brick paths leading to and past the building. There is a small sign that reads “The Garden Restaurant” near the edge of the path.
2. Based on the elements presented in the image, the bright sky, the amount of greenery and the glass roofed structure lead me to believe that this is a place focused on plant life and nature. The building looks like a modern greenhouse. Aside from the sign along the path, the building’s sign is pretty large and has a visually intricate entrance that would catch the eye and draw people into the restaurant. There would be people around because there are bricked pathways near and along the building’s perimeter.
3. This work is believable from a technical level. There are very few things that look out of place or unnatural, especially given the sheer amount of literal natural elements in the image. The rows or medium bushes are the main red flag that I see. They don’t meet the ground convincingly and are clearly copied over one another when zoomed in even slightly. It is not as noticeable with the image at regular size. The text on the sign is also hard to read; I almost missed it. I’m not really sure what architecture is being blended here, to be frank. This just looks like a building. I think the brick wall and maybe the entrance are the elements added together with the main glass part being part of a greenhouse. I’m also not sure what the meaning of the image is, having not read the concept yet, unless it is an appreciation of nature, but that doesn’t factor in the specific choice to add the bricks and entry way.
4. This could very well be a social commentary on nature and our relationship with it when it comes to plants and perhaps agriculture. By the building being labeled a restaurant. There is a lot that can be said about humans and agriculture and by potentially dining while surrounded by natural flora might incline people to think about the environment and where their food comes from. Again, this is from the plant life and potential greenhouse roof elements, the brick and entry way only add support to the believability of the structure.
5. This piece by Jacob Taylor is focused on nature and dining potentially while surrounded by flora. The building features a glass roof, intricate entry way, and a large sign of the name of the restaurant. The bright sky and greenery are eye catching and frame the structure. The majority of the elements are believable. However, the architectural pieces added together seem to be about visually pleasing elements as opposed to having separate meanings that come together.
