For this project, I found an image online of an upscale, contemporary, modern home. I chose to use images that I took myself from buildings in London, along with found images online of older, intricately designed buildings to combine newer architectural aesthetics with old architectural trends. Blending modern architecture with historic structures creates a sense of harmony yet tension, as the viewer can sense a change in the design. My concept was to highlight that there has been a very broad change in the way society treats architecture and the structure of homes. Modern homes, such as the original one in my piece can indicate how now society prioritizes speed and cost rather than craftmanship, and artistry. To further highlight this concept, I incorporated a cobblestone driveway to give it an older effect, used windows from historic homes found in the UK, as well as added columns and a detailed statue.

This work by Sallie Kate Thompson is composed by adding older architectural elements overtop a modern looking house, as well as implementing elements to the surrounding area that would contribute to a more older, classical feeling. The subject is the modern house, which has had elements such as windows and pillars from older buildings added to it. As stated in their description, this work plays with tension. This tension comes from the older architectural elements working in tandem with the modern building. It’s new, and it’s strange, as these elements together aren’t very common. The artist also adds a less modern house in the background, giving the image an older feel, and further contrasting with the main building. Elements such as a cobblestone driveway and statue in said driveway further add to a more classical feel. The post has a 3:2 aspect ratio, and the image has a good flow to it. The image also appears to have a warmer tone, which also adds to the older architectural elements. The artist also added reference links to the source images.
ReplyDeleteThis work turns an image of a very modern house into something more interesting. This work could be interpreted as showing a stark contrast in the way buildings were made long ago versus how they look nowadays. The modern houses are very flat and lacking in any detail. By adding older elements such as columns, older windows, and decorations add a lot of character to the building, a level of artisanship and care that is not present in modern buildings. It is a sharp critique of the lack of detail that goes into modern architecture.
This work shows understanding of the assignment of blending architecture to create a new meaning. The work uses its own images, as well as images found online. The images have the correct license needed. One of the areas that could have been improved on would be the background by the secondary building, you can see where the large tree was removed, and the sky doesn’t blend quite right. Other than some slight lighting adjustments for some of the elements, the work is well put together. The work correctly presents a new meaning for this building, and the theme of architectural blend.
This work exists to show that the dedication of craftsmanship and care we used to give to buildings is no longer here. The elements that were added to this building are pieces of much older buildings. The pieces were incredibly detailed, and took much longer to make. Buildings, houses, all had lots of design in them. Our society today focuses more on simple shapes, and speed, and so many of our buildings are going to be simple, basic shapes, and very flat. This could also be seen as cheap, or dull. By adding these older classical pieces, the building becomes a stark contrast to what very modern houses look like. It sticks out to the viewer's eye. The commentary that this piece is trying to convey is how much we as a society have moved away from that craftsmanship from older buildings.
To end, this work is a well put together piece that calls attention to the shortcut our society has taken to creating buildings, prioritizing simple form and speed, rather than artistry and craft. The work is well put together, and really plays with that tension you get from mixing modern houses with classical elements. I enjoyed reading about the message this piece presents and watching the process from the gif.
