Majesty vs. Misery
For this project, I wanted to create a piece that revolved around royal individuals being out of touch with the public as well as reality. This past summer, I visited London and went to Windsor Castle with my family. I was blown away by how massive the castle was, as well as the extent to which they lived extravagantly. I wanted to use this particular photo that I took because I knew that with its rich history and existence for years, it would make for a believable aged photograph. My original concept idea was leaning towards the thought of how the overall pageantry of the crown can be misleading, as the crown is told to hide emotion. Though I felt it was important to point out that while the queen during this time was living a very lavish lifestyle, on the other side of reality, children were being forced to work. This is why I chose images of three children from the Library of Congress, showing them in dirty work clothes to highlight this message. I also distressed the edges by using different brushes. I added a massive crack in order to help guide the viewer's eyes to the children. I also wanted this to feel a bit eerie and spooky as the children are looking right at the camera. Another tool I used was the vignette effect, and I blurred part of the subjects, as well as the building, to highlight the shallow depth of field.
