Transformative Project -- Jordan Harper

 Early Morning Game

For this project, I decided to use this portrait of my late Nana at a bingo game night. I wanted to make this piece reflect her and things she liked as much as she enjoyed playing bingo. This includes everything else in the clip: a nice porch, flamingos, rainy/stormy days, seashell windchimes, and a pair of yellow chairs that she had (she really liked the color, haha). I used After Effects to animate the lightning, rain, raindrops bouncing from the grass, and the wind affecting other elements.

No generative AI was used.

  1. 1. Jordan Harper’s project shows her Nana sitting at a table on a porch, surrounded by things she liked, yellow chairs, seashells, and flamingos. It looks calm and personal, like a snapshot from her life. There’s animation added too, like rain falling and flashes of light to look like lightning. It creates a quiet stormy atmosphere that feels peaceful but emotional.

    2. The piece feels like a way for Jordan to honor and remember her Nana. The calm setting shows love and comfort, while the stormy weather adds emotion and memory. It seems like she’s showing that even though her Nana is gone, her spirit and the things she loved are still there. It’s a personal piece that feels real and warm.

    3. The details make the portrait easy to understand, you can tell who the person was just by what’s around her. The rain and lightning are done really well and add meaning instead of being distracting. The glowing flashes draw your attention back to her Nana, like remembering her for a second. The animation helps turn a regular portrait into something that feels alive and emotional.

    4. This work connects to how people today use photos and videos to keep memories alive. Instead of showing her Nana in a dramatic or fantasy way, Jordan used small, real details and motion to make the memory feel natural. It’s a reminder that digital art doesn’t always have to be perfect, it can be simple and heartfelt while still being powerful.

    5. Overall, Jordan’s portrait stands out because it feels personal and honest. The rain and lightning make the piece more emotional, and the porch setting makes it peaceful. Compared to other works that are more dramatic, this one feels grounded and sincere. It’s a great example of using motion to make a memory feel alive.
