Christoffer Relander is a Finnish photographer and visual artist who mixes photography and compositing in a really creative way. What I like most about his work is how he finds balance between nature and surreal digital effects. In his Neonland series, he takes calm, snowy forest scenes and overlays them with bright neon signs. The result feels like a dream, a mix of wilderness and the energy of city lights. The colors, glow, and atmosphere make the scene feel otherworldly but still believable.
In his We Are Nature series, Relander goes for a softer, emotional approach. One piece shows a side profile filled with autumn leaves and branches, blending the human figure with nature. It’s simple but powerful, the shapes and colors flow together naturally, and you can almost feel a connection between people and the world around them. What stands out to me is how little he actually needs to make it work: just a clean silhouette, some light, and the right tones. It’s proof that strong imagery doesn’t need to be overcomplicated.
Another favorite of mine is from his Jarred & Displaced II collection, where he puts nature scenes inside glass jars. It’s such a cool concept, it feels nostalgic, like capturing a memory you don’t want to lose. The photo looks realistic even though it’s clearly composited, which makes it both clever and personal. For my own “Under the Influence” project, I want to take inspiration from Relander’s balance of simplicity and storytelling. My plan is to create a small series that combines portraits, textures, and light to explore emotion and environment, keeping that same clean, surreal look his work is known for.
