Chris Allard Architectural Blend

 

    For my blend, I wanted to create an image based on the concept that a lot of times, certain organizations or symbols will try and build and present themselves as clean and sophisticated, when if you take a closer look under the surface you can find a much messier truth to them. I picked a few examples to include in the piece, but overall, I just wanted to focus on the ideas of the facades that can exist in the world and how we can put these companies or institutions on pedestals.

  1. When first looking at this particular photo, the first thing that pops into my head is the brightness of the photo itself. The sun seems to shine on a walkway towards restaurants, businesses, and federal buildings as well. The photo also shows a walkway with greenery that surrounds each building at first glance, until you look at the bottom where trash starts to fill up underground. It also seems to give a more greenery approach as the “cleanness” of the picture seems to fill more up than the “trashy” section on the bottom does.
    The photo has a very good transcription on how we as a society seem to praise companies as a huge benefit when we don’t see any of the faults that they seem to have. It also tries to give a bit of a warning to the person walking along the sidewalk that they could be going the “wrong way” instead of realizing what these companies are truly doing. While we may be looking into the future on how companies could be “switching” to cleaner energy, there could still be considered a mess on the inside, whether it be metaphorically or literally.
    As stated before, while the approach is to influence the people to look at these companies on the inside, the picture sort of comes off as a brighter, and happier look rather than a truthful look for it. This part confused me that while the transcript is to look at what companies do on the inside, the “trashy” part is only revealed in a small section that no one can see if they were in the picture itself. There also seems to be only one person in the picture which does not show whether he would be going the “wrong” way or the “right” way. I think that adding more people, or having a picture of them looking down at the trash or at the companies would show who is the wiser in their approach with this topic.
    The “perspective” approach is a good way to interpret your message to show the truth, yet the “truth” is not shown much to give more meaning to the viewer of this picture. In my opinion, the sunshine effect, along with the colors going around most of the picture gives off a more positive meaning towards the image rather than a negative. I believe that adding a darker approach would grab the viewer's attention since the companies names would be eye-catching to the viewer since they have seen them before and that it would help influence the picture more on the message itself. Another approach would be to give the “trash” section, and the companies section a half side on the top and bottom parts of the image while having more people either looking downwards, or looking upwards.
    When we look at how companies are trying to go “green” like Apple, or Amazon, we start to think more about how grand the future could look, when in reality, we don’t see what the consequences could be, or even the prices that they would pay in order to have these futures. We, as a society, see these companies as huge benefits to our own needs when it comes to shopping, eating, or just transferring money to loans, or things that we would need to live. I would keep practicing on the saturation of images, or the positioning of images to give much more meaning for the audience, but overall the image does a very good job on communicating the message that you are aiming to show.
