Under the Influence of Ozan Karakoc

 Brooklyn Presnell

  1. 1. Brooklyn’s work is influenced by the artist, Ozan Karakoc, whose work is very graphic and bold. Both works are mostly monochromatic with pops of bright colors throughout the piece. She makes use of interesting textures such as torn paper, paint splatter, water spots, and more which add lots of visual interest. Brooklyn also makes use of bold text accompanied by spliced up photos of herself as the main focus.
    2. Both pieces seem to comment on Brooklyn’s sense of self. The 2nd moreso than the first, as it displays more of her body and is accompanied by the large “B” initial. I can see these works as main pieces that will begin to define Brooklyn’s artistic style and expression.
    3. Brooklyn’s works definitely look as if they were inspired by Ozan Karakoc. Both works are very bold and graphic making great use of bright neon colors. The use of textures also really helps to complete the graphic look of these pieces. She did a great job of masking the body parts for the 2nd work. Though I feel the work on the 2nd piece was more cohesive in comparison to the 1st piece. I feel the focal point isn’t well defined whereas the 2nd composition is well balanced.
    4. Brooklyn’s works are very successful. Both are bright and graphic with lots of texture reminiscent of Ozan Karakoc. The pieces were arranged well and would easily find a spot in Brooklyn’s professional portfolio. They both work to establish her individual style as an artist and provides footing towards work she will create in the future.
    5. Out of the two, I feel the 2nd is more successful. The composition is balanced and the colors are harmonious with each other. In comparison, for the 1st work I feel there are many elements, yet no defined focal point. The elements feel unbalanced. The paint splatter and torn page work to frame the face, so maybe if there was another element in the left bottom corner, this could alleviate the unbalanced look. Overall, these works have a great look and I’m excited to see the new things Brooklyn will continue to make in the future.
