Under the influence- Shyana M

  1. Both images present a black and white figure and background with some shapes that provide a pop of color to contrast with the black and white. Both Photos have the character fairly centered in the composition as they break out of a rectangular box that makes up the background. The pieces are cohesive but I do feel as though there could be more that is different in each element, such as a more drastically different pose for the figure, or maybe they are breaking out of the box in a different way rather than both of the heads coming out of the top center of the rectangle. The color elements are also placed in essentially the same place except for the second image having a third shape, which I think is very effective but having more variety in their placement between each photo will help keep them visually distinct while still cohesive.
The works overall could simply be to serve as an appealing aesthetic which I do think it achieves that. But I think to look for a deeper interpretation you could find that there is possibly a commentary on beauty standards since both images seem to frame the subjects body but also cut off their head, with the second image wearing a fancier outfit I think some commentary on beauty could be found though it is not obvious at first glance.
I think there is a good foundation here on a technical aspect, Personally I find the tonality of the image a little flat, even including the color elements. I think increasing the brightness/saturation of the colored elements or even giving them a very subtle gradient could help brighten the image overall because they both feel very dark as they are now. I think doing more in terms of blending the figures with the ground elements would help integrate the more as well as making the background rectangle a different brightness would help them stand out a little bit more. Overall I think the individual elements that make up the photo are chosen really well and I think adjusting the values of the elements would help give more depth to the images.
As stated previously I think the works serve really well as conceptually aesthetically interesting. I think you could come up with a grander commentary of the world but the images as they are now don't explicitly give anything away in terms of what that commentary would be. Though I don’t personally think it needs a deeper meaning, because I think the concept itself is rather interesting in it of itself for a series of visually appealing works.
Both images are very similar conceptually, thought personally I enjoy the second one more since the human subject feels more planes since it has more of a pose and costume to it. I also enjoy the use of a fish bowl as the head and how it relates to the use of the ocean as a ground element, so I think that helps to make this image feel more cohesive. Like I stated previously I think overall adjusting the values and contrast of the elements in order to better balance what you want standing out to the viewer would be an important step. I also would love to see how you are able to stretch this concept with the later images, don’t constrain to just this composition, play with different poses, maybe have more than one subject, maybe rotate the rectangle, this is all to say I think you have good building blocks, now that allows you to play and experiment with them to create a series that feels the same without relying on a very similar composition.
