Night Prowler - Kim B

For my project I took photos in three different places. Outside from my balcony I took shots of the trees illuminated by the moonlight. The wind had them swaying a little too so that added the feel of movement when I placed the photos together, Next I used a string light with some white bulbs to create the inner circles. Lastly, I used a laser pointer and had it swing in a circle while I took photos from below.

While this project didn't turn out exactly how I planned, overall it captures my mindset rather well since I was all over the place and it reflects my dealing with my mental health. I imagined looking up to the night sky through the trees and seeing soft colors. It is a mix of chaotic and yet also calm. We can see through the dark if we focus on the light.

  1. For this assignment Night Prowler by Kim B she chose a landscape view for the work which showcases an upward photo of trees and tree branches taken at night. After the photo was taken a black and white filter was placed over the image creating an eerie feeling. The trees and branches were taking over a long exposure so it captures some movements and swaying from the trees moving in the wind which adds to the eerie, fuzziness creating an unknown or uncertain sensation. It appears that the image of the trees was duplicated to create some sort of trippy, trance. There are looming light sources in the center of the photograph and also around the tree branches.

When I look at this work I see it as eerie, trippy, unknown, or in a trance are many of the words that come to mind. When I view the positioning of the lights circling in the center of the photograph I feel like I’m being sucked into the photograph. It reminds of the show “The Twilight Zone” a sci-fi fiction from 1959. The circle of lights in the center remind me of a swinging pocket watch that we’ve all iconically seen in movies as they say “you are feeling sleepy”. When I look at this work I view this as a psychedelic trance twilight zone atmosphere.

I think kim did a good job creating contrast within the original photograph. I like how dark and intense the tree and tree branches are. I also really appreciate how she mimic the swaying of the trees with the light around the branches. I think this emphasized motion in an interesting way. I wish the light source in the center of the photograph was more intense. Since the light sources are in the center of the work I would expect them to be the focal point of the work but since they are more faint it’s competing with trees for the focal point. Since the trees are so dark and intense they take most of the viewer's attention instead of the lights in the center of the canvas. However on the flip side of this the faintness of the lights add to the unknown and eeriness of the work. The faint lights make you have to squint your eyes and really focus on them through the trees which in a way really sucks the viewer into the photo almost as if we were there in real life. As I focus in on the lights it seems like the trees are stretching out towards me in a uncomforting way like I'm being consumed by them.

In today's culture I feel like this is relevant in how we as people get sucked into or over consumed by the things around us. For example our phones/computer/technology, anxieties, overbearing stress and long to do lists, and the list goes on. This work exemplifies how the contrast of things are affected when shooting at night when the camera tries to capture both details and intense light sources and why many times these photos must be taken over an elapsed time to capture all details clearly.

This piece by Kim B showcases an upward photo of trees and tree branches taken at night with looming light sources in the center of the photograph and also around the tree branches. This work creates an eerie, trippy, unknown, or a trance like state. The positioning of the lights circling in the center of the photograph makes the viewer feel like they're being sucked into the photograph. This overwhelming feeling the work creates reminds the viewer of the feeling of their own stresses, anxieties, and how easy it is to become consumed in our day to day tasks.
