Night Prowler - Hang Le

For this project, I knew I wanted to focus on motion and the incorporation of light with the outdoors. After spending half of my spring break backpacking in Pisgah National Forest, I was inspired by a “campfire” we made out of our Nalgene bottles and headlamps. I was truly fascinated by the colors and this sparked my idea. Additionally, one out of the seven Leave No Trace principles is to minimize campfire impacts which led to my insirpiation of this project. I used some laser lighting I had at home and explored those colors.

  1. This piece is Night Prowler by Hang Lee. In the center is the focal point and what appears to be a fire pit. After drawing the viewer in, the fire pit displays a range of light and colors comprised of greens, blues, and reds. There appears to be a lit fire illuminated in a soft blue hue inside of the basin. The surrounding area is shrouded in darkness, and I am unclear if it is indoors or outdoors based on the items. However, this actually serves well to lead the interest and redirect attention to the central object.

For me, a firepit is a place of relaxation, comfort, and comradery. It is a place where people join together and escape their troubles. Often accompanied by drinking, singing, laughter, and stories. It can also be a place of quiet and contemplation, perhaps during a outdoor excursion. The colors resemble what might be seen displayed by a fire and the circular motion mimics the swirling that may occur.

This image uses color, light, and the darkness well. Being unable to really tell the surrounding objects adds a bit of mystery, although perhaps some form of light around the fire pit might add context or a setting. Maybe even some stars seen in the distance could aid that goal. At the same time, not everything has to be abundant in visual stimulus, so this image is very lovely in its simplicity.

This work is a wonderful depiction of something society typically enjoys doing, particularly with family and friends. It would likely evoke memories of times spent with others either camping or just hanging out in the back yard. It allows the viewer to stop and reflect on those times. The scene itself is also a great reminder of slowing down, returning to basics, and enjoying being in the moment.

At first glance, it was simply light inside of a fire pit. But as I took time to explore and really absorb the picture, I became aware that I was thinking about my own experiences with similar settings. Thus, the image became much more than just a play with color, exposure, and light versus dark. It became relatable, and that to me is one of the best messages to receive.
