The Love We Feel - Zoe Turner Night Prowler

For this project, I knew I wanted to do something with one of my dogs, light trails, and the stars. Sadly, my first idea flopped because my neighbors had their back porch light on, but ultimately it worked out for the better. I ended up going in the woods behind my house and running around with my Itzy light ring while my dog, Cider, was not amused enough to participate in the running; he just sat with my keychain version of the light ring.  I want my piece to evoke feelings of the vibrant relationship humans have with their pets.

The main base of the piece are long 20-30 second exposures of the light ring on rainbow mode. Cider stayed surprisingly still during this so you get an obvious dog in the corner, as well as my legs while I moved light over him. The background is one of many long exposures of the night sky to capture a lot of stars. This one is in the same space as the light trail images so the trees are what were actually in the background of my focal point images. I also used one of my favorite night sky images as an overlay to add more of the stars.

In photoshop, I used linear light dodge for the blending mode for the two visible light trails, and then hue for the third that adds color and texture into the background. It took quite a bit of trial and error actually to get the blending modes to work in harmony and look good against one another, which was surprising.

  1. This composition is titled The Love We Feel by Zoe Turner. These images are composed well, the lights are vivid and bright. This allows the viewer to always have something to look at. The different direction in circular motion allows the viewer to play around within the composition itself. The environment plays well with the overall theme as it shows the woods, and sky. One thing I would mention would be the aspect ratio, you have the dog at the bottom right but you also have your leg right next to it. If you were to add your complete body it would make you almost as tall as the trees.. The texture within this composition is grainy and adds to the elements of the woods.

At a glance I would want to think this work is about you playing around with your dog outside and having some good quality time, however, there are some elements that do not make it seem that way. Example.. There is a lot of beautiful and bright motion within the lights almost as if you’ve been running around but the dog is sitting down. This can be perceived as if the dog wasn’t having a good time or he wasn’t moving around. Even if the dog was sticking his tongue would reflect this. Since you only have your legs in the pictures it’s kind of hard to tell that this was supposed to reflect the love you and Cider have for each other.

This composition uses light in a very playful manner and plays with the notion of darkness. The artist allows the circular motion of the lights to almost glow up the sky and trees. The sky almost looks like there are some aurora lights happening. There is a lot of overlapping within this project which works well with the different exposures. Adding a sense of different layers types with the colors itself such as color dodge or lum gives depth within the colors.

  2. The night exposure specifically this composition creates motion and depth into the night. Not only does long exposures take 30- 60 secs or however long you want them to be but it brightens up the sense of feeling and interaction you want to portray to the audience. This composition can be shared with the audience to reflect the sense of thrill and love or any type of emotion we get when we see our pets. Everyone may have had a pet within their lifetime, we can all say they give us a sense of emotion that no other can explain. Darkness can be a tricky subject. It can turn out to be really scary and almost like the unknown. Unlike light it adds a sense of hope and calmness.

Overall this composition The Love We Feel by Zoe Turner reflects the project and addresses the parameters of Night Prowler. It transforms an image in the woods that is meant to be scary into a compositing that creates a movement of excitement and motion. These lights connect to the overall theme Zoe Turner was talking about within her artist statement. The Love We Feel towards someone and it does not only have to be related to our pets.
