Under the Influence - Zoe Turner

 For this assignment I decided to emulate Christopher Mckenney's surrealist horror work. 

Most of the process for creating these images in Photoshop consisted of masking. I made sure to have several establishing shots and took care to not budge the camera. (Although that did happen a little bit…) 

I wanted to capture the balance of growth and decay and how the two work together to create our world. Mckenney’s work focuses a bit more on the horror and macabre aspect, but I liked using his visual language as a jumping off point for my own project.

The images do not currently have titles, but I plan on titling them for the final portfolio.

Under The Influence - Sanura Ezeagu

 For my artist I decided to emulate Luke Butland. He is known for his amazing designs regarding the Joker movie posters. I have always looked up to his work and appreciate the cinematic vibe he has in his work. Since these are movie posters he also implements type in his work. To follow the same vibe I used picture I took of my sister and her friend and tried to recreate the cinematic view Butland has in his work. 

Out West -Brianne Schriever (Under the Influence)

 My work is inspired by Charlie Davoli who makes composites that are otherworldly and surreal. He combines nature, humans and urban settings to create these pieces. I wanted to take photos I had taken in Utah, Arizona and Nevada to transform the canyon and desert scenes in a way that would enhance the natural beauty that exists within them in a not so natural way to create dreamy settings. These pieces mostly combine natural elements to create these unlikely sceneries.

The artist I chose to emulate was Chad Wys. He combines traditional and digital media to create collages highlighting the difference in contemporary society's reception of beauty versus the historical world. I used a similar process and focused on drawing the connection between the modern use of visual communication and earlier forms. I combined images of cave paintings, rock carvings, and hieroglyphics with some of the elements found across Chad's work. These include soft colors, textures/patterns, basic shapes, and handmade markings. I photographed charcoal, paint, colored pencils, and oil pastels.

Under the Influence- Blue Pearlz

For this project, I got my inspiration from Tommy Ingberg and his style of Surrealism. He likes to work in abstract ways that generally want the viewer to guess what the meaning behind the image entails. He creates minimalistic and self-reflecting surreal photo montages dealing with human nature, feelings, and thoughts. I like the abstraction idea of surrealism and I enjoy making the viewer guess what they are viewing when it comes to my images. As an extra bonus, I wanted to challenge myself to create something interesting and enticing with the idea of being minimal.

With that inspiration, I was going off the general idea based on my sorority, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, and the little aspects of it that don't get too recognized. I wanted to emphasize the pearls that we wear and the color blue that relates to the organization. The pearls relate to the founders of the organization, we call them "The Five Pearls" and it's one of the main accessories that the organization is based off of. And the color of the organization is royal blue and white and I made it generally on the blue side of things because I wanted some consistency throughout. Along with that, Ingberg ran with a specific color scheme of gray, black, and white so I created my own with the blue and white color scheme. With two of the images, I wanted to play with creating a background with the depth of field being very off-putting as well as Ingberg did with his images. 

Under the Influence- Fran Gatti

The designer I chose was Cam Grants, Graphic Designer of the H3 Podcast. His work varies a lot but for the most part, everything he creates is simply for the meme of it. Everything is silly and unexpected, and it works well for his work on a comedy show. His Personal work is mostly digital collages of crazy animals or creatures made from parts of other images. He looks for shapes and textures to use as his medium and I tried to emulate that in my own style with my own goals. The other day there were alpacas on campus for Earth Day and I took a lot of great images of them. For the body of the Alpacapillar, I used the little tufts on the top of their head and layered them. I had fun making this piece although I did not have time to finish the other two and will have to post them later.

Joel Robison is a skilled photographer known for his creative and whimsical style of shooting. His art frequently combines elements of the fantastical and surreal, fusing the worlds of dreams and imagination with reality. Within the photography community, Robison has gained a sizable following and recognition thanks to his distinctive style and method. What his work reminded me most of were elements from Alice in Wonderland and this is what helped me promote my ideas.

I chose David Carson as my influential designer. David Carson's work captivates me with its chaotic yet balanced essence, resonating deeply with my own creative style. As a designer, I'm drawn to his seamless blending of disparate elements, creating compositions that exude both chaos and harmony. His ability to fuse chaos and balance into a cohesive artistic vision reflects the complexity of human experience and serves as a perfect inspiration for portfolio series. In this series, I plan to capture formative feelings and experiences throughout my life based on songs and lyrics that capture their essence, mirroring Carson's dynamic interplay of chaos and harmony while playing off of his musical interests. Here is the first of many. (Still working on the rest <3)

Under the Influence - Christi Montes

 

For this project, my inspiration was based on the Multi-media artist Magdiel Lopez. I was mainly interested in his composition/scale and the different color palettes he uses, which can go one or two ways: neutral but still bold or bold and playful. I wanted to play around with the overall story, which is my sister and I. We are both very playful and funny at heart, but we each have our personalities; together, we make a pretty good team.
