Under The Influence Formal Analysis - Brianne Schriever

Charlie Davoli is a photographer based in Italy who creates surrealist works combining unlikely elements into compelling pieces. He also has a background in music as a participant in a previously existing band. As a photographer with a focus in compositing, his works are otherworldly, providing a break from the mundane feeling of reality. His subject matter is often edited together to create ironic scenes, consisting of elements that would not naturally co-exist. Davoli combines humans with nature and urban settings.

Davoli relies on Photoshop as well as his iPhone for editing, with his preferred method being the phone. He also enjoys posting his works to Instagram as a means of communication. His works rely heavily on masking and compositing imagery with a filter and adjustment to lighting/color applied to the overall composition in the end to create cohesion. His compositions also tend to draw the viewer’s eye to the center of the work, using imagery and interesting elements that stand out against the rest of the work.

I’m very interested in works that rely on surrealism to create unique narratives of spaces that would not exist otherwise. I intend to take inspiration from Davoli’s works in terms of subject matter and the combination of unlikely subjects. I specifically want to use elements of nature and landscapes as my main compositional elements. I plan to combine these with other elements such as humans and man-made items/structures to create otherworldly imagery.
