Ashley Dinning - Night Prowler

My concept for this project was to create a haunted Halloween village using some of the decorations I have that I typically use for Halloween. I took photos of each part of the village separately to allow for more freedom in composition. I also incorporated candles shaped like pumpkins to match the other pumpkins in the project. For the three main pumpkins, I used light-up plastic jack-o'-lanterns. I wanted the lights in the sky to resemble the Northern Lights, so I used glowsticks to create different effects in the sky. All of these photographs were taken by me.

  1. For this project I had attempted several different ways to get these interesting light elements. I had to make sure the room I was in was completely dark and at first when I began taking photos the room was not completely dark which messed up the photos. For the lights in the sky I used a glow stick and honestly just shook it around a lot in a dark bathroom. One thing I did struggle with was getting the photos my phone is more on the older side so I had to do a lot of googling to help me get the photos the way that they are. I think in the end things did turn out the way I wanted them to look and it shows the different way I experimented with light.

The work is composed of I think 10 or so different photos, each photo of houses, pumpkin candles, as well as the plastic light up pumpkins were all different photos I took and photoshopped them together. I made the main pumpkin really large in comparison to the other village pieces to give it more of a spooky vibe. The foreground consist of the houses while the background is the main pumpkin as well as the lights that look like the northern lights.

I do know the project is about Halloween due to the pumpkins standing out really well, I would say the houses are a little harder to interpret but after a longer look you can see the full picture and understand what the image is depicting. I think the meaning is a haunted village of the sort mainly because after you read the description and go back and look at it you can see the little village houses.

I think the content in this project is really good, all the photos are original and create a cool composition. I think the technique is decent toward the bottom of the pumpkin and one of the pumpkin candles you can see a little mess up but for the most part I would say the technique is fairly clean and done nicely. I think the different exposure methods make the composition have a cool Halloween effect which is a cool touch.

I think this piece is relevant because Halloween is coming up and you do not often see images referencing Halloween elements like this very often which allows viewers to get into more of the Halloween spirit.

I think the work successfully speaks on the different exposure methods and about the cool ways you can document things at night and the cool effects they can give.

I will compare and contrast Jennie Keopaphone's work, I think her project is very interesting to look at and really captures the viewers eye. You can really see the cool way she made with the lighter and the different elements she added to enhance the image. I think it created a very cool effect and the more you look at it the more you can see and the more detail you can see.
