Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo - Ximena Alvarado (Night Prowler)

The idea behind the concept was to play around with the magical aspect in fairytales, such as in Cinderella. Within the dress scene, when she is changing dresses there is a magical element that takes place, and I wanted to play around with that concept. Within my image, I wanted to create the idea of me spinning with the lights going around the dress. I took a original image of me and used AI to help create the spinning half of the dress. With the lights I used glow sticks and had them go in a circle. Through Photoshop, I create multiple layers of the glow stick images and played around with the blending modes to help them blend in. I also used AI to help some of the areas blend into the background and the dress.

  1. In my recent composition, I tried to capture the enchanting essence of fairy tales, drawing particular inspiration from the live-action Cinderella film. The moment when Cinderella transforms into her ball gown, surrounded by a shimmering, magical aura, served as a key influence. My initial aim was to use glowing lights from glow sticks to form the lower half of the dress, mirroring the ethereal quality of that scene. However, after experimenting with a spinning light effect, I realized it didn't quite achieve the desired illusion. Instead, I reimagined the lights as a circle spinning around me, maintaining the enchanting quality of the scene. To help create the gown element, I took a picture in a dress, and through the help of AI, I created the bottom half of the dress and made it seem like it was spinning. The background was a original image of a forest garden area, which I also had in my camera roll. To help make it seem like a night time scene, I played with the levels and added a gradient to make it darker at the top. This also helped bring more emphasis to the figure and the lights.
The work can be interpreted as a graceful depiction of transformation, evoking the elegance and wonder of a princess’s journey. The positioning and the spinning motion of the dress create the illusion of a magical element, reminiscent of iconic princess transformations like the one in Cinderella. The nighttime setting enhances this effect, mirroring the atmosphere often seen in other princess tales, where pivotal transformations unfold under the cover of darkness, adding a sense of mystery and enchantment. The circle going around the figure also gives other magical elements seen in other fairy tales, such as in maleficent.
Within the work, the project parameters use light and darkness in a transformative way. The lights are blended within the background through different blending modes. I used the paintbrush tool and the blur tool to help blend some of the circle with the background and have more lights glow around the figure. However, one element I would change is to photograph the background at night time. Having the background blend into black can make the background a little lost and the view can miss the garden element of the background.
The concept behind this assignment is something that has been seen multiple times within culture. The idea of creating fairy tales into live action has been seen more within the years. When it comes to this composition, the use of darkness and night exposure is used to help create a sense of magic, which isn’t a real concept in the modern world. WIthin society you wouldn't see lights going around a figure, unless it’s done with certain tools and technology. The work exists within our larger cultural context as an exploration of transformation, beauty, and the archetypal story of metamorphosis, which is deeply ingrained in fairy tales, literature, and cinema. Princess stories, like Cinderella, have long represented ideals of grace, personal evolution, and the belief in magical possibilities. This work taps into those cultural narratives, resonating with an audience that is familiar with such themes of empowerment and change, particularly through visual symbolism.

  2. The artwork I find exemplary is the Light Angel by Aliyah Valcin. Within the artwork, the artist created a halo with lights and created angel wings. In addition there is a light that comes from the figure. When comparing it to my artwork, The artist plays around with a similar concept that relates to a magical element. I would learn more about how the artist created the wings, which I could use to help create the bottom half of the dress.
Aliyah Valcin's Light Angel offers a strong parallel to your work, as it plays with similar magical elements through the use of light. The way Valcin crafts the glowing halo and angel wings could provide valuable insights into manipulating light to create magical, transformative effects. Learning more about the techniques she employed, especially in forming the wings, could help me refine your approach to developing the glowing bottom half of my dress. The shared exploration of light as both a physical and symbolic element deepens the sense of transformation, aligning both works within a broader conversation about the blending of magic, elegance, and visual storytelling.
