Rowe Institute: Destiny James

Rowe Institute

For this assignment, I decided to elevate our Rowe building to something that represents the Art department as I know it to be. I see Rowe as a power house for all creatives, so I wanted to represent that in an architectural way. I retired the building's camera inspired structure to something that fits my imagination of how Rowe would look if it was reconstructed. I also decided to add the two murals that are at the back of the building to express how I think the department should display its creativity to the rest of the university.

  2. The Rowe building is still obvious. It didn’t lose its main structure too much, except for the camera appearance. The building is now more symmetrical. Three different murals decorate the brick walls. In the center where the name of the building rests, the transition between it and the mural fades. The canvas dimension seems to be a square, and the composition seems centered a bit with a slight tilt.

The image is very clear. Just like you’ve stated, I agree that Rowe is a powerhouse for all creatives. By adding the murals onto the frontal side of this building, it supports the fact that this is an art building with colorful visuals.

I think your idea of recreating Rowe into something that fits her imagination of an art building is brilliant, however, I think there wasn’t a lot of changes to really re-imagine this structure. The only architectural change was the mirroring of one of the walls onto the other and making the building more symmetrical. In addition, there wasn’t a blend of another structure from a different architecture. The composition of the image seems awkward. Part of it is cut off on the left, the building is slanted, and the focal point isn’t visually interesting as it is slightly centered but not exactly. The fade transition of the mural in the center of the building appears to be incomplete in terms of photo manipulation because it looks too digital and not realistic.

Again, I agree that Rowe is a powerhouse for creatives and should represent that subject well. To non-artists, art seems like a little aspect of life, but art is so much more. It’s everywhere. From architecture to entertainment, art is a huge impact in society. By re-imagining the Rowe art building architecturally, students can be more inspired or just simply look at the building and be amazed with how it looks.

Overall, as I’ve mentioned, the idea is great, and the concept is very relevant to art students and the art community in general. My main critique is that there is a lot of potential in this piece, but it wasn’t executed as successfully
