Brooke Buchanan - Night Prowler

For my project I wanted to go a different route and try to create something more composited, and conceptual. I created the dress portion using blue glow sticks for my long exposures, and took roughly 15 different images at night in my living room. When starting my project and capturing images, I wasn't planning on making a dress like image, or a recognizable figure, but after reviewing how the light trails turned out, I saw how I could create this dress form. I did this by, removing the darkness around the light trails, so you could only see the light form in my finished image. Also the background is a mix of a image I took of the night sky and an image from NASA over laid on top.

  1. The work consists of a single focal point. The focal point is a woman posed figuratively with a ball gown or gala dress. The dress is illuminated with a soft texture and delicate blue hues. The figure is pointing in the lower left to whatever it’s attention is focused on. The background is a night of stars with one that sparkles brighter than the rest.

The work seems to focus on the concept of a dreamy or whimsical night. Perhaps a resemblance to the princess story Cinderella by the pinned up hair and periwinkle ballroom dress. The expression on the figure's face is mellow with a slight smirk of happiness. The smirk could represent happiness from the beauty of the night and/ or the anticipation of events that could happen on a magical night.

The use of the light trails was a beautiful way to puzzle this work. The nature of light is illuminating so using it as the embellishment of the dress was clever. The choice of allowing the dress to be blue helps create a new story instead of following all similarities of the folk tale story Cinderella. There are some correlations to the common story but again, it seems like another untold story. The background is simple and sets the tone of the work. If I were to make any changes to this work I would make the star a little smaller to lead the eyes of the viewer inward vs the way my eyes look at the subject then outward to the big bright star. I would also add more highlights on the gloves to highlight the radiating light from the star but all together the composition of this work is great.

The stories of magical nights and its possibilities of some sort of princess story are always relevant. There are constantly remakes of the same story so I feel like this work could contribute to that relevancy. In a way it will continue to fit into today’s society because magical nights are timeless; they will continue as long as the night exists.

In conclusion, I loved the idea of using light in this way. A way of highlighting how magical or illuminating light can make even the simplest nights. I also enjoyed the rendered look of everything rather than it being so “ realistic”. It pulls more focus to creating the design from a creative’s perspective. The concept reflects on something we all are familiar with. The use of colors and background were also a good choice in highlighting the anticipated focal point. Overall, the composition was beautifully put together and I enjoyed the difference in rendering opposed to the typical way of tackling the assignment.
