Night Prowler Otto Lucas

For this project, I wanted to focus on something a little more realistic but still a little magical. I worked with a couple flashlights, sparklers, and candles to try to create a little flame sprite taking a rest in a candle, something kinda like Navi from Ocarina of Time. I took multiple images and layered them over each other to allow for a bit more detail to be shown in the image as well as set the flame into the candle and adjust it a little bit so it looked a bit more sprite-like.

  1. In your photograph, the viewer sees a lit candle placed in a wooden area, surrounded by leaves under a tree. The setting and object come together to create a calm atmosphere, but yet somewhat mysterious. Also in the background you can faintly see a broken fence structure. Surrounded by the candle you can see darkness engulfing the edges of the image, and creating a center focal point to the lit candle.
I love how you captured the luminance of the candle, and the overall glow and light reelected on the surrounding leaves and tree. I feel as though that your image feels very cinematic, referring to the mood that your image portrays to the viewer. As a viewer your image feels crisp and detailed, that you can even see the smoke lifting from the flame. I think you did a good job of capturing mood, and tone, and like you mentioned a realistic, magical feel.
I really enjoyed your piece as a whole, I like how you kept everything simple. I feel like for this piece less is more, and you let the light reflection lead this piece visually. The small detail of having the broken fence in the background helps set perspective and depth of field. Also I think that having the fence visible helps balance the piece, with the smoke on the other side. You mentioned Navi from Ocarina of time, and I can definitely see the reference as a spirit taking rest in the candle light. I think it would have been interesting if you would have experimented with making the blue luminance around the flame more contrasted, but then again it might have combated the warm overtone, and completely changed the piece. I could even see your piece going farther as in maybe a mini series, where each piece shows the darkness around the candle getting darker, as portrayed in your gif. I really enjoyed your piece, and see that you use light well in your pieces for this class. You created the mysterious ambience for the viewer to see and feel in your piece, and leaving the viewer wondering why this candle is lit, and who lit it? This piece really draw you into the center, and puts the viewer right in the setting of being in front of this lighted candle. I really loved this piece, and think you did a great job!
