Evie Khang - Night Prowler

For my project I based my concept on the idea of the constant stream of flowing information in the digital age. We're bombarded with new information--good and bad-- every second of our lives in the digital age, and after a while you feel quite numb to all of it. I wanted this piece to convey that sense of mindlessness and monotony we feel as we try to navigate this busy world.

  1. I see that there are strings of lights swirling out from the monitor corresponding to the colors on the screen. The room is pitch black and the only things that are visible are Evie, the monitor, and the strings of light. Some of the light waves seem to be bouncing of some of the surfaces. For example, the vivid red one seems to be bouncing off the desk and down, the pinkish one bounces off the couch, and the yellowish white on the arm of the couch.

Your description says that the concept has to do with the constant flow of information in this digital age and being numb to it because it’s so much. I do see where you’re coming from but if you didn’t mention that, I would’ve interpret it differently. Because of the image that you used on the monitor, which is usually associated with films, it makes me think that this piece is about being obsessed or addicted with watching too much TV, which is something I can relate to a lot.

The lighting is good and the colors from the monitor screen are nice and crisp, however, the Evie in the photo is a little blurry and grainy, especially in the darker areas. I think you mentioned in class that the strings of light are actually LED lights or something that you have, but in this piece, they seem a little too digital. I think the lights are interesting but one thing that stands out a lot to me is at the end of the green strings. It seems to be partially masked out and dimmed.

Your concept of living in this digital age is very relatable in the real world. A lot of things have gone digital, and so many new things are being invented that are digital. We are constantly learning these new things and taking in all this information through digital media, and sometimes it can be too much, just like in your piece.

Overall, your work is both visually interesting and relevant to our world today. Although it’s great that our society is involving and it can look pretty, but it can be overwhelming.
