Wish Upon A Star Tiana Cohen

My concept was to make a wish upon a star, or in this case, a comet. The reason it takes place at uncc is because it's supposed to reflect my wish of finally graduating and taking the next step in my journey. Additionally, I wanted to get an image of the green and gold lights that were hung up outside of student union and incoporate it into the composition.

  1. The work underneath my own is Shyana’s Talking To The Moon. It’s a landscape piece and gives you the perspective that you’re looking out of your bedroom window into the night. The color scheme is darker with a nice lighting peering into the bedroom. There’s a moon that is large but not to the point where it’s overwhelming. Talking To The Moon gives me the feeling of when the sun is setting and you’re just enjoying the view.
My interpretation of this work is seeing the beautiful view while relaxing in the comfort of your own space. It gives me a feeling of nostalgia as I’ve found myself looking out my window at the view and just enjoying myself. The moon is captivating and is a nice contrast to the warmth in the sky. It has a glow that’s noticeable but not overpowering. Additionally, I like how Shyana chose to keep the buildings and other scenery to fill the space as opposed to having the photo with an open field and a sky.
The work itself starts with an image taken when it was nearly dark and was edited to be darker, resembling the moment just before the sun is fully down. That photo is then overlaid with another photo of Shyana’s bedroom view where she skillfully masked out the view from her window so it could easily be replaced with the first image. The lighting was also edited on this photo to have the room lighting reflect the outside setting of the work. She then added stars and a moon before toning down the entire image and adding an outer glow to the moon which helps create depth within the composition. One thing that I wanted to highlight is that the image of Shyanna’s bedroom was a really good image to use in regards to lighting. At first I thought she added additional lighting to reflect the moonlight seeping through the window but it really was just an adjustment to the original photo.
This photo relates to our culture in a way that is nostalgic. Everyone can relate to looking out the window after a long day at work or school. I feel it's especially relevant for people our age as sometimes you feel like you need a break, or a moment to catch up within a safe space and that’s what this picture is giving.
In conclusion, Talking To The Moon is a piece that offers you a priceless moment in time. Through well crafted digital compositing techniques, color, composition, and perspective, Shyana nails the look she was going for. Regardless of the viewer's perspective I think we can all agree that this piece gives warmth and comfort in some sort of way that we all can relate to.

  2. 1) Described the work
Tiana’s piece showcases the UNCC campus near the student union. The night scenery is enhanced by the various street lamps leading to the student union building and the colored string lights in the bushes. The sky above is illuminated by stars and a glowing comet.
    2) Interpret the work
Tiana’s piece reflects her dreams for the future, using the motif of the shooting star to show her earnest desire to graduate and start the next chapter in her life. The blurriness of the photo works to make her wish seem somewhat unclear, yet so close. Exactly like the feeling of starting a new chapter, everything is somewhat scary and hazy, but we continue to persevere through.
    3) Evaluate the work
I like Tiana’s piece and the message behind it! I really love how she was able to capture the sparkle of the lights here. However, I do have some gripes with the composition. I feel if she centered the Student Union building, the piece would have a better look. Especially with how the street lights already lead your eye to the building, yet they get cut off because of the angle. I don’t know how intentional the blurriness of the photo was, but there’s no clear focal point which is really sad since the comet in the back seems to be the most important part of the piece. Maybe if she made the comet much sharper in comparison to the rest, the blurriness could have worked better in her favor.
    4) Theorize - How does the work exist within our larger culture? What is the relevance?
Graduating is a major part of every student’s life and with it brings new challenges and experiences. Everyone wishes for a bountiful future and this image embodies that wish. Wanting to reach your full potential is what I feel this image represents and it's relevant to every human being.
    5) Summarize
Overall, Tiana’s piece tells the story of her wish of finally graduating and beginning her adult life. The way she captured the shine of the streetlights and sea of stars in the background was very beautiful. I do wish the composition was more centered and had a more distinct focal point. But overall, it’s very nice.
