Rocky- Night Prowler

October Nights
For this project, I wasn't quite sure what to do but I thought it would be cool to incorporate the picture I took during the harvest moon and the light garden (not sure what it's called). This is the first time I've practiced taking pictures during the night. Kinda goes with the October theme with the moon and then sort of breast cancer awareness with purple/pink color and homecoming, unfortunately no beer...

  1. I see the student union building in the center of the composition. There are trees and lit lamps leading the eye toward the building. Green and yellow Christmas lights are decorating the bushes near the benches. The moon is surrounded by clouds and the sky looks a little spooky. What looks like purple greenhouses (I think that’s what the structures are) on the tops of the buildings.
I interpret the work as oddly calm and a little bit chilling. The glow of the lamps and the moon both feel mysterious and the fog reminds me of the negative connotations surrounding mermaids. Like someone is sailing and they’ve just found a siren singing and something bad is about to happen to them (even though there is no ocean in the composition). That’s the kind of creepy I feel from the image. The walkways are empty and this suggests abandonment to the viewer.
The scene has a long exposure to capture enough details on the brick building. The clouds around the moon look like brushstrokes of a painting. The purple and green lights on in the window make the scene feel like it’s it could be a made-up story. I would straighten the photo to the right the slightest bit so the composition didn't feel like it was leaning to the left. Maybe consider using the spot healing brush to remove the white dot in the sky. It feels distracting.
This spooky scene feels like it has been abandoned. The purple and green lights can be associated with Halloween colors and the scene feels gloomy. You mentioned that pink/purple could be representing breast cancer (purple represents pancreatic cancer) and that could be the “bad thing” I sensed with the uneasiness of the empty location. The greenhouse structures feel a little ironic in this context because they are associated with new life and this composition feels more like death.
The composition feels like a successful first attempt at night photography. I’ve discovered it’s more difficult than it looks. There are a lot of new problems that come with night photography like color noise, but I don’t see any areas with a major color noise problem. It’s more difficult to have a sharp image with a night exposure but you’ve captured a fair amount of detail in most areas.
