Otto Lucas Transformative Portrait

Hello, so for this project I wanted to do a bit of a self-portrait I guess? More so the concept of self-identity. I wanted to create a portrait in the side profile like old portraits and make the defining features parts of my personality. I collaged together pictures from my rock collection, had my favorite shirt, and included my favorite colors to create this portrait of my identity without my face.

  1. I see a side profile portrait of Otto. They’re wearing a blue and white checkered shirt. Otto’s face is not included in the portrait. Instead, there are rocks sitting inside the skull. The skin on the face is jagged like the rocks inside.
The fog around the body feels mysterious. Like something is unclear and that is why the face is missing. I think the rocks are sentimental and that is why they are in place of the face. You mentioned your favorite rocks, shirt, and colors. I interpret this as sometimes it is easier to describe who you are with material things instead of labeling yourself with words.
The rocks being present instead of the face definitely emphasize the importance of the collection. Having no face is an interesting aspect of the portrait and catches the viewer's eye immediately. I love the vibrance of the hair and it pairs well with the embers flying out of the skull. The edges of the portrait are defined and pop off of the dark background.
The slow moving fog at the bottom effectively makes the portrait feel a little bit strange or different. The fog is set at a nice speed and is a bit mesmerizing. The embers flying to the top of the portrait lead the viewer’s eye to Otto’s profile. The embers fly fast to the top just like they would come off of a fire.
This image was shared with an audience to show that not only your looks define you in a portrait. This was a nice way to incorporate personality into a portrait. There is so many unoriginal self portraits but this was unique to Otto. I don’t know Otto personally, but now I know more about them!
I think this self portrait was effective and technically clean. It looks like Otto put thought into their idea and I think it was executed well. The black background and the white fog makes the portrait dramatic and it’s interesting. I love the choice of rocks too!
