That Fall Feeling

For this project I wanted to capture how I feel during the fall. I chose to have a picture of myself in pajamas, holding a cup of steaming hot tea with my eyes closed. Fall is a time to get cozy and it always makes me feel sleepy to be in the nice cool weather (unfortunately it has not been cool recently.) For my movement I added a steam effect on my cup and additionally used a leaf and the particle world tool to make it look like it was raining leaves. All of this is just to convey the feeling I get when the leaves start to change color and fall off the trees.

  1. The work underneath mine was Insomnia by Kelsey McGoldrick which features her resting in a teacup. The background is a nice fall backdrop and the cup has steam coming out of it. The overall scene is cozy and gives a comforting feeling.
The image suggests that Kelsey could be a tired individual who gets comfort in her drinks. Emotionally, it makes Kelsey more relatable as I too struggle with the same things. However, it’s a nice insight to see how she deals with the same struggle differently. Additionally, this image is a result/outcome. The outcome of a long day where you finally get to relax only to struggle to sleep, and ultimately wake up the next day feeling tired.
The image itself is a play on how Kelsey struggles to sleep at night. The background shows that it’s daytime, further enhancing the theme she was going for. Kelsey is also leaned over with her eyes closed with a face of content. Her arm is wrapped around the cup in a way that gives off comfort. Additionally, this piece plays with scale having the tea cup and kelsey be small in a big world. I think this image works well as a portrait. There are enough visual clues between the tea cup, the steam, the way that Kelsey is modeled, and the overall setting of this work. It’s a piece about having insomnia and the one comfort Kelsey has in that struggle.
The motion in this work helps establish the coolness of the fog and the warmth of the cup of coffee that Kelsey is in. I think it deepens the meaning of the photo because without it, you wouldn’t know the temperature of the cup. The steam also helps you think of the cup of coffee as a jacuzzi and that’s it’s relaxing.
In 2022, it seems that overworking and lack of sleep has become the social norm. I think this work supports that and the struggles that one can be facing in their day to day life. Some people try to make it a competition of who gets the least amount of sleep, while others are just trying to get a piece of mind in their day to day lives. This image was shared with us to show how Kelsey starts her day, with a warm, comforting cup of coffee.
Insomnia is a piece that is comforting and warm despite its cooler background. It’s a piece that many people who struggle to sleep with can relate to. It can also be a way for people who have a hard time waking up to relate to as well. With the chill of the autumn background and the comfort of the warm coffee cup, I think it’s a piece that’s fitting in today’s culture.

  2. In this piece, I see you standing in front of what appears to be a building on campus between two trees whose leaves are almost gone. Leaves are falling down as you stare at your warm mug in your hands. The background photo seems to be like it was taken on school campus. On a separate layer, I’m assuming is a different photo taken at a different time of the figure in pajamas, most-likely at home. I don’t see any big color adjustments applied to the piece, but it does appear to be a single photo because the colors of both the photos are similar.

You said the mood of your portrait is feeling sleepy in the cool weather of fall, but the piece doesn’t really convey any mood. As I mentioned, no adjustments, filters, or other photo editing tools are really obvious in the video. All the visual representations are there, such as the mug, pajamas, and leaves, but something like the overall temperature, exposure, or saturation can really help support a mood or feeling and add that finishing touch.

The motions in the video are good, but because this portrait is more realistic, the falling motions of the leaves are a bit to fast, making them look less natural. I did realize that steam from the mug is almost unnoticeable because if I didn’t read your description I wouldn’t have caught it. With that aside, the falling of the leaves goes well with the trees in the background.

I think your piece is very relatable to a lot of people. The cool weather is perfect for drinking hot coffee, hot chocolate, hot tea, and anything that is warm. Fall is definitely a favorite season of mine and a very beautiful time of the year.
