Kelsey McGoldrick-Under the Influence

My influence is from an artist April Greiman, she was one of the first graphic designers to bring digital design to the United States. Most of her work is collage work that typically include vibrant colors and quirky imagery. My biggest influence came from an advertisement for the olympics of a mans leg coming out of a boxed out sky, similar to my pieces above. I wanted my works to show almost going in-between two worlds, or in other words trying to get to a happier place.

  1. Both works include repetition of bright blues, yellows, and oranges. There are orange and yellow shapes framing parts of the compositions and white squiggly lines running through the composition. The sky and clouds are an important element in both pieces. Kelsey and her body is repeated through both images and appears to be entering another frame.
The work has repeated elements while having the focus of the images being on different things. The first image has a focus on the grass while focusing on the repeated elements and the second one focuses on the sky. These two go hand in hand and it’s like Kelsey is jumping from ground to sky. The ground to sky transition reminds me of the game Doodle Jump with the vibrant design elements.
The photographs are clear, vibrant, and look like they were all shot with similar settings and lighting. The idea from ground to sky is creative and I didn’t notice it until I looked at the two works side by side for a few minutes. Really clever! You seem to be putting your hand out and trying to reach into this new world in the first and being brave enough to jump through in the second one. The only thing I would change is moving the cloud over your right hand in the second image to cover that harsh shadow.
The works are successful because they equally work hand in hand. The two connect and show a story in chronological order. I could see you making more of these and the next one is what you find in this other world/dimension. I wonder what’s through the portal! Really clever and well executed.
I wouldn’t say either one of these is more successful than the other. Both works feel equal and need the other piece to feel completed. The works could stand on their own but the connection you’ve created is what makes them even stronger. Kinda like each other’s “Yin and Yang.” Wonderful start for your portfolio!
