Under the Influence - Brooke Buchanan

  1. Brooke Buchanan’s two works for this project both carry the same theme. Both are self portraits with a heavy space/ astronaut theme. However, they are different enough to not be too similar. The first image is of Brooke facing forward, eyes closed with eyeshadow on, in an astronaut suit, floating in space. The second piece is of Brooke looking upwards at a alien spaceship. She is wearing a metal looking suit and appears to be in the processes of being beamed up into the ship.
The meaning of the two pieces together as a body of work appear to be some association of alienation with feminine presentation and potentially a personal representation of loneliness.
Brooke’s work is especially polished in nature. Most specifically, her first picture. The astronaut suit is very well shot. The lighting makes sense as well as the reflection of the stars on the helmet help tie the background with the subject. The second is also put together well, however there are a couple areas that don’t quite match with the quality of the first. The reflections on the body suit don’t really match the setting, as she is in space but the reflections make it look like she’s outdoors on earth. However the texturing of the beams and the light texturing on the space ship are very well done. The composition is very clear and easy to read.
The works themselves obviously are commentating on something, but without a statement it can be taken in a couple of different ways. Alienation is an easy association to make with space and alien space ships. Space is also a very lonely place, even though there are millions of stars and planets that fill the void, it’s still mostly empty. Additionally, these being portrait like enforces an understanding that this piece is commenting on something that is potentially identity related.
Overall, Brooke Buchanan’s works are fantastic and well-put-together. There is clearly a meaning behind these images that can be interpreted in a couple different ways. The first piece is definitely stronger than the second one in terms of visual elements and refinement. However, the second piece is still incredibly important as it really builds off of and refines the themes that the first sets up.
