Alyn Spiller, also known online as PhaseRunner, is a freelance digital artist living in Swansea in the United Kingdom. He creates work for clients in the form of movie and video game posters, but he also creates fantasy landscapes through photo-compositing, as well as posting video tutorials/speed-paints on YouTube showing how he created them.The subjects he chooses vary in specifics, but largely they center around forms of fantasy and fiction, from the non-specific to things pertaining to specific existing media. The majority of these, however, involve extravagant fantastical landscapes with dramatic colorful lighting effects.
Many of these works create scale through the use of a smaller figural subject (see the boat in the first image and the samurai in the second image) juxtaposed against a vast landscape. He is also exceptional at creatng mood through lighting, in my opinion. The second image is a very good example of this, as the pinks and blues create a soft, mysterious feeling, and the direction of the lighting leaves the character and many of the finer details of the scene in shadow, leaving the viewer to wonder more about the world he's building in the image. He makes use of blending modes and overlapping lighting effects to create otherworldly effects like the beam out light bursting from the mountain.
I want to try my hand at emulating his techniques to create vibrant and believable fantasy settings and scenes as part of my project. I have tried to incorporate an element of costuming and character into some of my previous projects, so I would like to continue that theme in this in some way, perhaps by using those costumes/characters as a point of theming the settings and setting the scenes.
